Vlog #1 - Left Behind (NSTP)

We had our NSTP fieldwork yesterday which was an experience I will never forget.

Recap:
So the bus left without me 'cause I was late... I've already given up hope on catching up with them so I decided to just go home. Just when I'm already at Legarda station, I saw two students wearing a nstp shirt and so I asked them if they were in the same section as me. And just to my luck they are and they're planning  on going to the location of where our fieldwork is. We got off at Santolan station and took a jeep going to Antipolo, which by the way we aren't even sure if it's going to Sitio Galilee (the place we're heading to). We got off at our stop and rode a tricycle from there but the manong driver don't even know where that place is. So we rode in circles asking for directions and apparently the community that we're supposed to go is still far away and no jeeps passes there. With an hefty amount of money, the manong driver drove us to our destination and got I reunited with my nstp friends.

The Mark of Athena

Hey everyone! Finally finished reading The Mark of Athena and it's so good! Brilliant, really!
Well, I actually got it on the released date itself, which is the day I've been dreading for months now!(I'm such a PJO fan!) I got through the first few chapters until I have stop and study for my finals and do other school related stuff. I know, priorities right. So I've been stalling for while just until I finished my finals and It's done!

So here we go, WARNING: MAY CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS!!

Where the previous books in the series have been funny, action packed and adventurous, The Mark of Athena does it infinitely better. This book has it all: character and relationship development, and action packed plot. Basically, this book was the bomb:

The book picks up from where we were at The Son of Neptune . We finally, finally get to see Percy and Annabeth reunited an entertaining fashion. However, the reunion is cut short when, in typical demi-god style, not everything goes according to plan. Thus, within 20 pages of the book we already have some action!

After the mishaps, our heroes begin the quest. Told from four alternating perspectives, this book is all about the quest of sailing to the ancient land (ie. Rome) to find the Doors of Death. On the way, the characters go on mini-quests and then report back in the Argo II.

In these mini-quests we really get a feel for the characters. The character development in this book was gold. Jason, who I've never really liked, gained my respect. Piper, who is cool but a damsel in distress changes our perception of her. Leo by default is awesome but in this book he becomes very relatable. Percy, who we think we know, we see from different angels that give us more understanding of him as a character. We really empathize with Hazel and Frank in their complicated situations. Despite all these good characters, Annabeth stole the show. She has always been brave and intelligent but in this book she really demonstrates just how brave and intelligent she is. Basically, if you didn't like certain characters before hand, you at the very least respect them by the end. And if you don't:

Just kidding. People are entitled to their own opinions.

Talking about character development: relationship development. The Percy and Annabeth in this book was different. Typically, they have a "lighthearted, awkward, teasing relationship." In this book we see Annabeth distance herself from everyone because she needs to be secretive. Percy is still the same but he develops a major fear and grows slightly weary of the hero life. Because the characters change and the relationship changes. I can see how people don't like these changes but I personally applaud them because it shows they are growing up and maturing.

The other relationship which was developed was Jason and Piper. You can see how they are sort of perfect for each other. On the other hand, I can see the issues with their relationship because:
1) Piper likes Jason for what she wants him to be
2) Jason is impassive.

If you don't like the relationship and character development there is lots of action. We have our usual selection of monsters which our heroes fight them off with their God given powers. I particularly liked that the heroes didn't just try to brute force beat an opponent. If the other person was stronger, faster, or just genuinely better, the hero would use their intelligence to beat them. In this book you understand what that, "being a hero doesn’t mean you’re invincible. It just means that you’re brave enough to stand up and do what’s needed."

Finally, the plot in this book... different. Generally, Riordan's plots are formulamatic: Hero receives a prophecy and completes it (albeit, not according to plan and just in time). In The Mark of Athena there are three prophecies which are stated in a slightly confusing fashion which makes it hard for you as the reader to really grasp all of them (although, I did read this at 12 am - my brain wasn't functioning at it's potential). Despite this, we do know that there is a basic plot: find the Doors of Death. It could be argued that that is really all we need.

To summarise, this book was good like the get-off-your-butt-and-go-buy-a-copy, page turning, this-should-be-more-popular good!

One last thing, the title of the next book has already been announced, THE HOUSE OF HADES. Any ideas what it is all about? Well, I've already got my own and I might as well keep it to myself for the time being. (:

Seeing the Stars with Sibol and Gunaw

As part of our Literature class (We were required to watch.), we were able to witness the majestic and astonishing stages of  Alamat: Si Sibol at si Gunaw, an all-Filipino original production that combines magic, myth and a message of love for Mother Earth.

Lisa Macuja-Elizalde
At times like this, I do appreciate that we are required to watch a performing cultural arts. It gives me time to be engross in another persons world, their passion and love for their craft. As well as living in another, created for you.

According to Liza Macuja-Elizalde, the story tells it all, how the environment is being abused that is. “Gunaw abuses the earth’s resources and destroys Sibol’s garden. Kapuy, his mortal father encouraged this kind of behavior. Sibol, on the other hand, nurtured the earth and grew flowers and plants in her garden with the seeds and roots given to her by her mother goddess Luningning. In the end, Sibol and Luningning defeat Gunaw and his army.”

Aside from Elizalde as the goddess Luningning, Nazer Delgado plays as the mortal Kapuy whom she falls in love with, and Francis Cascano and Yanti Marduli as the twins Sibol (Bloom) and Gunaw (Doom) who become locked in a battle over Mother Earth, one intent on its protection and the other on its destruction. Dancing as the young Sibol and Gunaw are Missy Elizalde (daughter of Liza Elizalde), and Elmoe Dictado, respectively.

All Filipino themed and authored, “Alamat” was brought to the stage as the writer told Liza Elizalde of the story. It is based on the children’s book by Palanca Hall of fame awardee Ed Maranan.

Alamat: Si Sibol at Si Gunaw goes onstage on August 24, 25 and 26, and September 1 and 2 at the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex, Pasay City.
For Thomasians were able to get a good deal on the price, from 600 to 250 with a ride all you can at Star City.
