As
part of our Literature class (We were required to watch.), we were able to witness
the majestic and astonishing stages of Alamat: Si Sibol at si Gunaw, an all-Filipino original production that
combines magic, myth and a message of love for Mother Earth.

At times like
this, I do appreciate that we are required to watch a performing cultural arts. It gives me time to be engross in another persons world,
their passion and love for their craft. As well as living in another, created
for you.
According to Liza Macuja-Elizalde, the story
tells it all, how the environment is being abused that is. “Gunaw abuses the
earth’s resources and destroys Sibol’s garden. Kapuy, his mortal father
encouraged this kind of behavior. Sibol, on the other hand, nurtured the earth
and grew flowers and plants in her garden with the seeds and roots given to her
by her mother goddess Luningning. In the end, Sibol and Luningning defeat Gunaw
and his army.”
Aside from Elizalde as the goddess Luningning, Nazer
Delgado plays as the mortal Kapuy whom she falls in love with, and Francis
Cascano and Yanti Marduli as the twins Sibol (Bloom) and Gunaw (Doom) who
become locked in a battle over Mother Earth, one intent on its protection and
the other on its destruction. Dancing as the young Sibol and Gunaw are Missy
Elizalde (daughter of Liza Elizalde), and Elmoe Dictado, respectively.
All Filipino themed and authored, “Alamat” was brought to the stage as the writer told Liza Elizalde of the story. It is based on the children’s book by Palanca Hall of fame awardee Ed Maranan.
Alamat: Si Sibol at Si Gunaw goes onstage on August 24, 25 and 26, and September 1 and 2 at the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex, Pasay City.
For Thomasians were able to get a
